We never imagined that our second child would be diagnosed with Autism at the age of two years and three months. Being born with perfect physical condition and experiencing ideal growth in weight and height didn't guarantee that everything would be fine.<\/p>\n

Remaining optimistic<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We were pessimistic at first, wondering how to educate him and how to care for him. Then I researched extensively online, visited special needs schools (SLB), and discussed with mothers who also had children with Autism.<\/p>\n

With my first child, who was typical, I taught letters through songs and hand gestures<\/a>. It turned out to be effective. Before entering elementary school, my eldest could already read. Eventually, I did the same with Azuri. Azuri's eye contact and focus remained extremely limited, necessitating patience and time.<\/p>\n

Initially, I sang the ABC song to him and practiced moving his fingers. I also introduced him to various line patterns and geometric shapes. Here are the initial instructions I implemented:<\/p>\n

  1. Line: I hold up my right index finger.<\/li>\n
  2. Line: I point my index finger straight (lying down).<\/li>\n
  3. Line: The index finger is tilted slightly to the left and then to the right.<\/li>\n
  4. Curved: The index finger and thumb of the right hand are moved in a curve, forming an upside-down C.<\/li>\n
  5. Curved: The index finger and thumb of the left hand are moved in a curve, forming a C.<\/li>\n
  6. Round: The tips of the index finger and thumb of the right hand meet, forming an O.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I usually apply this before my child goes to sleep, whether it's a nap or a nighttime nap. Why is this? I believe that, what a child's brain absorbs<\/a> before bed will be retained longer when they wake up because after learning, the child is no longer \"contaminated\" by their surroundings.<\/p>\n

    Activities done<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Alhamdulillah, at less than 7 years old, Azuri can already read fluently. He can also read English text.<\/p>\n

    Legos and bricks are his favorite toys. After building a robot and getting bored, he will use his imagination to create other objects.<\/p>\n

    Occasionally, I take my child on nature explorations. While walking my eldest to and from school, I introduce my children to the plants and animals we encounter. At home, I show them books related to what we've seen. For example, when I see a butterfly, I briefly explain its metamorphosis process. When I arrive home, I show them a science book about butterflies. When I see chickens, my children learn to differentiate between hens, roosters, and chicks.<\/p>\n

    Azuri often stops to greet and touch the babies and toddlers we pass. He's learning to love others, protect younger siblings, and differentiate between genders.<\/p>\n

    Sudah mulai mandiri<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Whatever activity we do with this special child, we must continue to \"chirp.\" Every sentence we say, even though his eyes aren't looking at us, is actually being recorded. When I ask him to weed vegetables, I tell him about their benefits. When I ask him to peel a boiled egg, I explain its origin.<\/p>\n

    I believe the role of siblings is very influential in the development of children with Autism. Azuri tends to imitate his older siblings' behavior. If his older sibling is studying, he will also learn. Whatever his older sibling plays, he wants to play too.<\/p>\n

    We have some homework to do regarding Azuri's development. Azuri's intonation still sounds stiff and rough. Occasionally his vocabulary simply 'parrots' what he hears. Although he can read, his comprehension is still limited. If the weather is severe, he is easily offended and becomes angry.<\/p>\n

    Now, approaching 10 years old, Muhammad is quite independent. He performs his daily prayers regularly and is able to fast all day during Ramadan. He walks alone to the mosque for Friday prayers. He does his daily chores, mopping the terrace floor.<\/p>\n

    He has also won several competitions: second place in the 3rd grade elementary school science competition, second place in the vocal competition for ages 7\u201311 at the Autism Awareness Festival, and favorite winner in the disability fashion show competition at TSM Cibubur. For us, these are major achievements.<\/p>\n
